Merrillville Planning & Building Department is responsible for the enforcement of the Town's building codes and zoning ordinances. We work with developers, contractors, and the public to ensure that all structures in Merrillville are properly built and that they enhance their surroundings. Our goal is to make sure that Merrillville's neighborhoods and commercial districts continue to be the vibrant places they are today.
The BZA or Board of Zoning Appeals hears requests for variances from Developmental standards, uses and special exceptions on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m.
The Plan Commission hears requests to subdivide, rezone, or make changes to the zoning and subdivision codes. The Plan Commission has a Work Shop at 6:30 p.m. on the 1st Tuesday of every month, and a Regular Public Meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. Meeting dates may be changed from time to time.
Filing deadlines are the 15 th day of the month preceding the scheduled Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals Meeting. BZA rules require a minimum of three petitions or the meeting will be rescheduled on the following month. Actions taking place at these meetings will be forwarded to the Town Council for action at a later date.
