Mosquito Control Update
With the recent heavy rainfall, residents may be noticing an increase in mosquito activity throughout Merrillville.
At this time, the Merrillville Street Department will not be conducting town-wide mosquito spraying. Spraying is not expected to provide a significant or lasting reduction in mosquito populations under the current conditions. Also, our Street Department crews continue working on recovery efforts following the Aug. 11 storm.
One of the most effective ways residents can help reduce mosquitoes is by eliminating standing water around your property. Please check regularly for water collecting in:
• Flowerpots and plant saucers
• Tires
• Buckets and containers
• Children’s toys
• Birdbaths
• Gutters and other areas that can collect water
Even small amounts of standing water can provide a breeding site for mosquitoes.
We appreciate residents’ understanding and encourage everyone to take a few minutes to check their properties and remove standing water whenever possible.
