Merrillville celebrating the holidays with multiple events
The Town of Merrillville is ready to kick off the holiday season with some exciting events.
The Town’s tree lighting ceremony and family night runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center, 6600 Broadway.
It all starts with hot chocolate, cookies, and other treats being passed out as the community gathers in the Community Center parking lot.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will catch a ride with the Merrillville Fire Department to attend the festivities. Weather permitting, the Merrillville 3D Ryderz Motorcycle Club will serve as Santa’s reindeer to escort him to the event. After Santa uses his magic to light up the tree, the activities will move inside of the Community Center, which will be transformed into a winter wonderland. Guests will receive more goodies as they grab some great photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus and tell them what’s on their list. The interior of the Community Center will be decked out with several trees decorated with ornaments and other decorations made by students from all of Merrillville’s elementary schools. Inflatable Christmas characters will also fill the Community Center.
The tree lighting ceremony isn’t the only way Merrillville will brighten the holiday season.
The Town-wide Holiday Home Decorating Contest has returned, which means it’s time for Merrillville residents to deck the halls and show their creative side. If you have festive outdoor decorations, then sign up for a chance to win prizes and bragging rights. Visit the Town events page -- https://www.merrillville.in.gov/residents/town_events.php -- to register. The registration deadline is 4 p.m. Dec. 8. Judging will take place from Dec. 11 to Dec. 20.
The first, second, and third place winners will be notified Dec. 21, and prizes will be awarded during the Dec. 26 Town Council meeting.
Prizes are as follows:
First Place — $200 gift card, trophy, and yard sign
Second Place — $150 gift card, trophy, and yard sign
Third Place — $100 gift card and yard sign
