What should I do if I smell gas or my Carbon Monoxide Detector alarm is sounding?
GET OUT of the house, do not open any doors or windows, go to a neighbor’s and call 911. Wait for the firefighters.
Does the fire department offer testing for fire extinguishers?
No.  Look in the yellow pages for the nearest fire extinguisher testing business.
Does the fire department offer CPR classes?
No.  Contact the Red Cross at 219-756-5360 or Nations Best CPR at 833-336-9277.
Can I burn my leaves and/or yard waste?
No.  Indiana State law prohibits any open burning.  See the Ordinance for open burning.
Does the fire department perform fire inspections?
No.  The Town of Merrillville Fire Inspector can be reached at 219-742-0107 (cell) or 219-769-0004 ext. 2 (office).
Will the fire department come to our Business for safety training?
Yes. Call 219-769-0004 (see the Safety Plan for more information).
Can my class (Scout Troup, day care, etc.) tour the Fire Station?
Yes. We offer a variety of Fire Prevention programs and station tours for all ages. Please see the Fire Prevention & Education section for more specific details.
Will the firefighters come to my class, etc. to teach Fire Safety?

Does the Fire Department offer free smoke alarms?
Yes.  The Merrillville Fire Department has partnered with the American Red Cross to offer free smoke alarms to Merrillville residents, request them by contacting the Smoke Alarm Request Line at 219-472-6866.
Does the Fire Department take used needles/syringes?
No.  You can contact Safe Needle Disposal at 1-800-643-1643 or Lake County Solid Waste at 219-853-2420.
