Stormwater Office Launches Rain Barrel Program

ORDER YOURS TODAY!  Deadline for ordering by mail is May 13 and online by credit card is May 19.  Pickup is Thursday, May 22, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm.

The Town of Merrillville Stormwater Utility department has launched a town-wide rain barrel program for residents and businesses of the town.  A rain barrel is a container that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams.  This water is typically used to water plants, trees, shrubs and lawns.  The advantages are they save you money, help reduce stormwater pollution, conserve water supply resources and are better for plants and gardens.

These 55-gallon rain barrels are made from recycled food grade barrels and are available in terra cotta, gray, blue or black for $51 each if paid by check, or in the same four colors by credit card for $53.50 each, which includes a $2.50 processing fee.

The program is being coordinated by UpCycle Products, Inc., and order forms are available at the Merrillville Stormwater Resource Center at 7404 Broadway.  They are also available at Town Hall, 7820 Broadway, in the Clerk-Treasurer’s office, Planning and Building office and the Town Manager’s office.  Brochures are also available at the Public Works office located at 13 West 73rd Avenue and the Parks Department office at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler Street.

You can order online at www.upcycle-products.com; on the right hand side of the home page is a section for order forms, and you click on the form for “Merrillville, Indiana”.  Completed order forms sent by mail with payment in the form of a check or money order should be sent directly to UpCycle Products, 400 East Wapella Street, Minooka, IL 60447.  Residents can call UpCycle Products at (815) 735-9583 with questions.

The rain barrels must be ordered through UpCycle Products and not through the town.  The pickup date, time and location are as follows:  Thursday, May 22, 2014, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Merrillville Stormwater Resource Center parking lot, 7404 Broadway.  A paid receipt is required at the time of pickup to verify purchase information.  For those residents who are unable to pick up the rain barrel on May 22nd, they are asked to arrange for pick up by a friend, relative or neighbor.

For further information about the program, call the Stormwater office at (219) 472-8668 or directly at UpCycle Products online at www.upcycle-products.com.
