The Town of Merrillville Stormwater Utility department is starting its 2017 town-wide rain barrel program for residents, businesses and other Northwest Indiana residents interested in purchasing a rain barrel.    A rain barrel is a container that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams.  This water is typically used to water plants, trees, shrubs and lawns.  The advantages of rain barrels are they save you money, help reduce stormwater pollution, conserve water supply resources and are better for plants and gardens.

The 55-gallon rain barrels are made from recycled food grade barrels and are available in terra cotta, gray, blue or black for $54.00 each if paid by check, or in the same four colors by online orders with a credit card for $56.50 each, which includes a $2.50 processing fee.  There has been no price increase the last several years.

The program is being coordinated by UpCycle Products, Inc., and order forms are available at the Merrillville Stormwater Resource Center at 7404 Broadway.  They are also available at the Merrillville Municipal Complex, 7820 Broadway, in the Clerk-Treasurer’s office, Planning and Building office and the Town Manager’s office.  Forms are also available at the Public Works (Street) Department office located at 13 West 73rd Avenue and the Parks Department office at the Pruzin Center, 5750 Tyler Place.  The deadline for mail orders is Tuesday, May 2nd, and the deadline for online credit card orders is Sunday, May 7th, at midnight.

You can order online at www.upcycle-products.com.   On the right hand side of their home page is a section for order forms; click on “Indiana Municipal Programs” and then click on “Merrillville”.  Completed order forms sent by mail with payment in the form of a check or money order should be sent directly to UpCycle Products at P.O. Box 315, Channahon, IL 60410.  For questions or further information, call UpCycle Products directly at (815) 735-9583.

The rain barrels must be ordered through UpCycle Products and not through the town.  The pickup date, time and location are as follows:  Tuesday, May 9, 2017, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Merrillville Stormwater Resource Center parking lot, 7404 Broadway.  A paid receipt is required at the time of pickup to verify purchase.  Residents who are unable to pick up the rain barrel on May 9th are asked to arrange for pick up that day by a relative, friend or neighbor.

For further information about the rain barrel program, call the Stormwater office at (219) 472-8668 or visit UpCycle Products online at www.upcycle-products.com.
